Every effort on this Gallery site has been made to accurately represent the vibrant colours of Sam’s images. Due to differences in computer screens and certain other variations, the images here should only to be taken as a guide. Obviously, the colour and sharpness of a finished print are far superior to what can be presented on a small screen.
Calf and Mummy Hippo
$210.00 – $2,700.00
This Mother and Calf are taking a drink from one of the river crossings used for migration in the Maasai Mara. Calves are rarely seen so I made the most of my opportunity.
Hippopotamus comes from the Greek word River Horse. After elephants and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the next largest land mammal. Hippos are recognisable for their barrel-shaped torsos, wide-opening mouths with large canine tusks, nearly hairless bodies, pillar-like legs, and large size: adults average 1,500 kg (3,300 lb) for bulls (males) and 1,300 kg (2,900 lb) for cows (females). Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it is capable of running 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances.
